L.T.D. – Togetherness $9.98 L.T.D. includes: Jeffrey Osborne (vocals). Now two steps away from the soulful funk of 1976`s Love to the World LP, L.T.D. were nevertheless still cast firmly in their mold, a foothold that would last until vocalist (and drummer) Jeffrey Osborne`s departure in 1980 for his own lengthy, and successful, solo career. In the meantime, though, the group would take four albums into the charts, including 1978`s Togetherness. While still a delicious blend of the fiery beats and earnest soul the band was expected to deliver, Togetherness showcased a sound that was beginning to favor the more commercially viable strains of R&B. Heard forcefully across the energetic "Holding On (When Love Is Gone)," with its understated horns and fat bassline, and the beautiful ballad "We Both Deserve Each Other`s Love," this transition was still a treat in any form. Both tracks were textured vehicles for Osborne`s to-die-for vocals — and both peeled off the LP to give L.T.D. respective number one and number 19 hits. The rest of Togetherness wraps songs in the same vein around several snappy funk tracks, most notably "Jam," which is a classic old-school groove, and "Together Forever," which brings both horns and bass to the fore, while Osborne steps back and gruffs up his vocals. Such a blend would have seemed disparate in the hands of a lesser band, but L.T.D. were always able to create a marriage between sound and style with a sureness and warmth that never failed to please. And even though the funk was fading from this set, Togetherness still emerged a near-perfect album. ~ Amy Hanson Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

L.T.D. – For You $17.27 The group`s only album for Montage and last before disbanding in 1984, For You found L.T.D. still mightily suffering the fallout from vocalist Jeffrey Osborne`s departure for a solo career in 1980. And whereas 1981`s Love Magic rode the coattails of its Top Ten predecessor, 1983`s For You had nothing to fall back on but its own merits. Eight songs comprise a set that is packed with an R&B synth popped ethic and lackadaisical intent. The title track, a smooth ballad that barely tipped into the Top 50 and proved to be For You`s only hit, was mirrored a little later on by "Is It Over." Without Osborne`s powerful voice to capture the moment, the band`s balladeering falls flat, leaving it in only slightly better space across the more up-tempo dance songs "Whatcha Gonna Do" and "Steppin` Out (Wid Ma Baby)." But at the end of the day, even slick production and proficiency couldn`t pull the band out of a killer rut. There`s not much energy to be found here — the band had clearly overstayed the welcome at its own party. Given the huge space that opened up in the early `80s and allowed an enormous number of bands to gain a strong foothold, it`s surprising that a band of L.T.D.`s stature couldn`t carve a niche. ~ Amy Hanson Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Checkmates LTD – Love Is All I Have to Give $17.93 Adapter: Phil Spector.Liner Note Author: Phil Spector.Photographers: Guy Webster; Tom Wilkes.Unknown Contributor Roles: Bill VanBuskirk; Harvey Trees; Sweet Louie.Arrangers: Dee Barton; Perry Botkin, Jr."Black Pearl" is one of the great Phil Spector productions, a phenomenal song with his extraordinary sound. That being said, it would be easy to try to dismiss this excellent album and focus just on the hit. That`s the wonderful paradox of Love Is All We Have to Give by the Checkmates, Ltd. and Sonny Charles. Charles only re-scratched the Top 40 once (and that in 1983), but it is this album which showcases his major voice. The Leiber & Stoller composition "I Keep Forgettin`" has that sound from the 1966 Billy Stewart hit version of Gershwin`s "Summertime" without the scat singing. Spector`s remake of his own 1961 classic for Ben E. King, "Spanish Harlem," fits perfectly here, while "Proud Mary," the simple John Fogerty title, becomes a gospel tour de force falling somewhere between Tina Turner and the Edwin Hawkin Singers. The indomitable Perry Botkin, Jr., who would hit seven years later with "Nadia`s Theme" (aka "The Young & the Restless"), arranges and conducts side one with assistance from Dee Barton. Side two is another kettle of fish. Barton arranges Spector`s adaption of "The Hair Anthology Suite" from the play Hair, most notably the material made famous by the 5th Dimension ("Age of Aquarius"/"Let the Sunshine In"). Though both artists probably tracked it around the same time — the 5th Dimension hitting in March and "Black Pearl" hitting in May 1969 — there is none of the life here that Marilyn McCoo, Billy Davis, Jr., and their group put into their first number one hit. Like a classic Spector 45, this album has one side that is totally inspired and brilliant, and a flip that won`t get as many spins. All in all, it`s a very important, and largely forgotten, bridge in Spector`s catalog and his only hit in America on A&M, the same label he brought the Ronettes and Ike & Tina Turner`s classic "River Deep, Mountain High." ~ Joe Viglione Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Ambulance LTD – LP $13.98 Contains an untitled hidden track following "Young Urban."Ambulance Ltd. Marcus Congleton, Darren Beckett, Benjamin Lysaght, Matthew Dublin.Producers include: Ambulance Ltd., Barny, Ron A. Shaeffer, Jim Abbiss, Chris Zane.Audio Mixers: Jim Abbiss; Barney .Recording information: London, England; New York, NY.Photographer: John Wilkes. The first full-length album by New York City`s Ambulance LTD offers up a whirlwind tour of rock from the 1960s to the `90s, while remaining surprisingly unique. Although the quartet proudly displays British influences ranging from the Beatles to the Smiths to Ride, the group synthesizes aspects of these bands into a melodic, guitar-driven, and unpredictable set of songs. The bold opening instrumental, "Yoga Means Union," builds to a deliriously energetic crescendo, while the following tune, "Primitive (The Way I Treat You)," dives into a slinky pop groove. Though "Anecdote," with its acoustic-guitar strumming and buoyant vocal harmonies, keeps the tone light and upbeat, Ambulance LTD also trades heavily in moody, atmospheric songs, as best exemplified by the ebb and flow of "Heavy Lifting" and the gorgeously airy "Stay Where You Are." Like fellow 2004 breakouts Franz Ferdinand, Ambulance LTD knows how to craft a fresh and intriguing sound out of rock`s past, making LP one of the year`s most welcome debuts.
