CHEN:
In the Italian city of Naples pizza is no laughing matter. Pizza sellers there are demanding stricter price controls to defend the reputation of the traditional Neapolitan product that came from the city over a hundred years ago.
STORY:
Queen Margherita would have been proud. “Pizzaioli,” or pizza chefs, in Naples handed out thousands of mozzarella and tomato pizzas in protest of rivals who, they say, use the spike in commodity prices to rip off consumers.
The ‘Margherita’, invented in Naples in the 19th century and named after the queen who had a penchant for fast food, is regarded by many Italians as a quality, low-cost staple – but recently locals say prices have soared.
[Vera, Naples, Italy]:
“This is a valid protest because the price is definitely too exaggerated. Pizza is a basic product that should not cost so much.”
commodity prices have fallen back from record highs in the past month on worries about global consumer demand as the world economy heads into a slowdown.
But retail prices have so far failed to reflect that trend and the head of the pizza chefs’ association says stricter controls are needed to defend the reputation of the traditional Neapolitan product.
[Sergio Miccu, Naples Pizza Chefs Assoc.]:
“It is a strong protest that starts from Naples and hopefully will spread to other cities. We do not want such a great speculation over pizza, there are cities like Rome and Milan where the prices reaches 7, 8,
even 10 euros. We say a fair price must be established of about 3.50 / 4 euros.”
The government estimates that Italians are likely to spend an additional $3,000 per family on food and energy bills this year. So ministers are proposing low-cost staple products to protect consumers from speculative price hikes.
